X ICE error when logging in

Nothing you wrote suggested that GDM had pointed you to icewm at all.  Why
would you expect 'ice' and 'ICE' to be the same thing on a Unix-type
system?

The .ICE* files are internal X control files, and icewm probably just had
something in its startup to fix the .ICEauthority file if it was broken.
