Can anyone explain what exactly is going on?

I had upgraded to Breezy, and all was working well. I received a notice
about a kernel upgrade, and it would take effect after a reboot. Some days
later after finishing urgent things, I did eventually reboot.
On completing the spashscreen formalities, and logging in with name and
password, I was booted out with the message to check the .xsesson error
file. It contained references to .ICExxx files (details forgotten)
Now - I had not installed icewm before on this system, so I was puzzzled as
to why gdm should refer me to icewm in the configuration file. Does anyone
know why?
My solution - I installed icewm and all relevant dependancies from the root
terminal. Rebooted into icewm and all is well. Now I want to track down
exactly WHAT happend to my system and WHY. Can anyone shed some light?
