After lots and lots of false starts and frustrating attempts, I got my Canon
BJC 4550 working under linux... (As you may have figured out, Canon has not
released driver information to the open source community for their printers
or scanners.) In my caset was working OK but I didn't have much control over
it via the normal CUPS / Ghostscript / Gimp Print utilities. (The ink was
too dark, for example.)

I was able to install the TurboPrint drivers http://www.turboprint.de/ under
Ubuntu and they work fine and give a lot more control over the output.

As for the connection, my printer (originally used with a Mac) has a serial
AND a parallel port. Does yours? Parallel is much easier to work with
because the serial port has to be initialized the same way on both ends AND
your cable has to be wired properly, whereas the parallel port doesn't have
so many ways to go wrong.

If serial is the only option, do you have a serial breakout box you can use
to troubleshoot? First of all you will have to determine you have the
correct port configured and set to the baud rate, stop bits, and parity that
the printer needs. Also you need to have the handshaking set the same....
The serial information MIGHT print out when you do a test page on the
printer, which might help you get it right on the computer.
