one thin you could try is to set a root password in the chroot:

sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/ passwd

log in on the console on the client and have a look at /var/log/ldm.log
it should show the error thats happening...
lock the rootpassword afterwards with:

sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/ passwd -l

it would be helpful if you can copy the file somehow and attach it to a
mail to send it here or to me personally if you dont want to spam the
list with it :)
