Display messed / currupted

Hi

    Using Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy).  I was trying to install a new sound
card, after plugging in the new soundcard I booted up the machine, it
booted well but did not detect new soundcard but it hanged my machine.
THan I had to do hard reboot and after that it currupted my gui display.
I tried dpkg reconfigure xserver-xorg and dpkg reconfigure gdm but it
did not solve any purpose.  

    I don't know how to remove hardware's drivers and install it again.
If possible than please tell how can I remove drivers of existing sound
card and display card and install again.

Please help
