peter at prospero:~ $ dpkg -S libstdc++.so.5
libstdc++5: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5.0.7
libstdc++5: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5

Looks like your next move is 

sudo apt-get install libstdc++5
