Bug in GDM login?

First, by default, GDM uses the biggest available (probed) resolution;
if you switched to a lower resolution as a user, the change does not
affect GDM itself.

Second, if the resolution is ok, then you might want to add the
proper DisplaySize directive to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:
