Making Init ramfs

Have built a custom kernel 2.6.14.1 (from kernel.org) on kubuntu breezy.
Needed a patch for a bluetooth mouse.
All succeeded but when I reboot I get a complaint that devfs can't be mounted
and I can't access partitions on a second harddrive.
So I got into mkinitrd and then mkinitramfs to build a better initrd file.
Used /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs -o /boot/initramfs
when the new kernel was running - booted with the initrd pointing
to /boot/initramfs and it boots but still the devfs problem and I can't mount
other partitions.

I am somewhat of a newbie and fell that my learning curve is so steep I am
slipping backwards and all to get a scroll wheel rolling!
Can anyone help?
