HP Printers, HPLIP

Earlier this week I switched to Ubuntu 5.10. So far I'm happy with the
move.
But there's one exception: my printer, a HP DeskJet 640C.
With my previous Linux setup, using CUPS and hpijs, printing was
smooth, so I'm assuming for the moment that the hardware is ok.
On my present system printing is terribly slow. Each time the printer
head has made a few passes over the paper, it pauses for a few seconds.
A single A4 page now takes much longer than before. The printing
subsystem uses CUPS and hpijs like before, the right PPD is used, so
what is wrong?
