apparently when running with wifi, ntp has "issues" in my clock was off.
I did verify that slocate was not running and even went does, I don't
get a load average of 16 to 24. Yesterday I had the lid closed for
eight hours and when I opened it, the system spent about five minutes
with heavy disk activity before returning to normal so I'm increasingly
suspicious that something about the suspend code is paging its brains
out. What's curious is that it doesn't show anything in the first hour
that I could notice and I forgot to pay attention.

more as I gather data.
