I am sorry Adrian. Am not too much of an expert yet to give you the 
right answer. i have generally found in linux one has to keep looking 
and learning. Suggest you go thru the wiki/help thoroughly alongwith 
waiting for replies by the mailing list.

Sometimes these problems have to be deferred till solutions are found or 
we dig deeper. I am still trying to get my webcam to work. The current 
linux driver is buggy. I have 2 options--i can get it to work by 
learning and tinkering with the source code etc OR wait for a new ubuntu 
version as i have given my hardware report to the development team who 
have a lot of different priorities.

I hope you have tried adjusting in the main menu (applications--sound 
and video--volume control--PCM)
