I've had success with the Intel 536based (win)modems though,
and ltmodem is one of the few Winmodems with some level
of linux support, so give it a go if you really need to.
You shouldn't need to *compile* the ltmodem stuff yourself though, as it
is available as a package for Breezy. It is one of the elements of
linux-restricted-modules and should be already on your system by default.
Modules called lt_modem and lt_serial should already be present. Try this
