I'd recommend shorewall.  Very easy to get started with (as long as you read 
the instructions), well-tested and scalable to future needs as well.  I'm not 
positive about when it is first activated, but I expect it follows best 
practice, and that should be configurable either way.  You *may* be able to 
find a front end, but a log monitor that emails you when bad things happen, 
and an icon setup to edit the rules file and restart shorewall should cover 
your needs.
