Problem with emacs and FreeNX

I'm trying out FreeNX as an alternative to VNC. I installed by
following the directions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreeNX
Everything seems to work well *except* emacs. If I launch emacs I get
the following warnings:
Warning: Cannot convert string
"-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string
"-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
And the fonts are undisplayable (just appear as blocks). If I try to
change the fontset or character encoding in emacs, it segfaults.
It seems to be a encoding problem, but there doesn't appear to be an
option to use utf-8 in the FreeNX client for Windows. I'd like to get
this to work because FreeNX seems faster. But I'm on the emacs side of
that religious divide. Vim works fine, of course, but my brain doesn't
work with a user interface that depends so entirely on the Esc key...
Can anyone confirm that this is a problem? Or has anyone encountered
and fixed this problem before?
