It supports 5.1 just fine using the appropriate hw device, which is
hw:0,4. Alternately, use plug:surround51. You won't need a custom
~/.asoundrc UNLESS you want 5.1 output to be the default; normally
users just want 5.1 for specific applications, and all ALSA-aware
applications allow you to specify the ALSA device used. For instance,
in beep-media-player, you would choose the hw:0,4 device in the ALSA
output plugin preferences.
