I'm not sure what the original question was, but I'm using an LG DVD 
writer to back up data... no problem so far, and I just installed and ran 
it. I'm not sure what you need to know, but does this help:

david at test:/proc/ide/hdb $ sudo cat model
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B
