Are you a member of the following groups:



cdrom

floppy

plugdev



Quick way to check is 



grep yourusername /etc/group



To put yourself in to the groups do System/Administration/Users and
Groups/

1. Click on your user

2. CLick on properties

3. Click on User Privileges tab

4. Make sure Access to CD-ROM drives, floppy drives and access to
external storage devices are checked

5. Hit OK and OK



Most devices should then work.  Otherwise, you'll need to do some udev
rules.
