Dual Boot with windows: where to put the boot loader?

I have no idea.
I've installed Ubuntu about 20-30 times on systems with Windows XP on
and have never had any problem at all. Grub detects XP and adds it
itself and then installs perfectly to the MBR.

AFAIK you can't edit the XP bootloader to add a Linux system to it. (But
I might be wrong on that).
