When I was running the default install kernel (i386), I ran uname -m and it
responded with the result  i686 .

That's when I upgraded my kernel, to the i686 kernel.

When the machine (550 mHz dell pentium), rebooted the system seemed 2x to 3x
faster than before, with no other changes made.

But, I do think I need to find out exactly what uname does measure. I'm
curious, now.
