Hi Simon,
I haven't set up a a dsl modem in a couple years so I want be of too
much help there. I think the package you need is pppoeconf. Install,
if not already, then execute "pppoeconf" on the command line and see
what you get. As I said, I haven't needed to do this in years but I
think that's what it's there for. Maybe someone else could chime in
here.
I'd advice you no get a cheap router. It makes all things "network"
much easier to deal with on all OS's. They are also dirt cheap now.
Regarding duel-booting with XP, I've got XP and ubuntu on this here
laptop. The ubuntu partitioning tool wasn't able to resize the
partition but that's one of the many things Knoppix is used for.
Download and burn Knoppix then restart your system with the knoppix cd
inserted. Once the desktop appears find QtParted in the menu (under
system tools I think) and shrink the XP partition. You can then
install ubuntu on the empty space you created.
Hope that helps,
Chris
PS: Keep posts on the list so that others will be able to find
solutions to there problems.
