ESD daemon

How do I set the esd sound daemon so that it doesn't lock the sound 
device?  I read something about it online, but I don't seem to have 
esdconfig, or whatever it said to use on the page, anywhere on my linux 
partition.  Incidentally I did find it in my fink directory in my OS X 
partition, so I know I didn't get the name wrong.  but things like qemu 
keep giving me  the /dev/dsp device busy error, and so did xcdroast.  
Does someone know how to do this?
