Well, don't leave us in suspense! What is the commented out PATH
setting? And what do you normally get if you run
echo $PATH
I suspect the commented out PATH setting leaves out a directory
containing a needed X or GNOME binary. And putting that directory in the
/etc/environment PATH will make everything all happy and friendly...
