Application icons

Hi all,
have just installed Hoary, and am having problems
adding icons to panel.
Keep getting "Failed to load image  - - - icon.png
Details not found."
Icons appear in Launcher Properties, and can browse icons list
Select icon, but cannot get it onto panel.
No icons next to apps in the applications list either
Have started making up a "How to" for Hoary, but can't do it myself :-)
