Where is the i686 kernel

There is no 586 kernel in Ubuntu.  386, 686, or K7 are available (with
last two have SMP flavor for multi-processors systems).  (Is this a typo
from your side?)

What you need (probably) is 686.  Search for, and install
“linux-image-686”.
