It depends on the make/model on the Keyboard.  The extra keys on Laptop
keyboards can generate the button-presses in a number of different ways that
are specific to each type of laptop.

If it is an external keyboard, it should generate extra key generates that
aren't normally mapped.  At a low-level, you can check for these with the
utility 'xev'.  If you can post some extra technical details about the
keyboard, we may be able to make it work out-of-the-box with Ubuntu/GNOME.

(Once you know what the keycodes you can map them with 'xmodmap' and then
assign them to tasks with the GNOME control panel.
