Sorry if this is a little OT but..

IMHO, in addition to all the great points made above, part of what
needs to be done to get linux into the enterprise or onto peoples home
computers lies with each one of us. We need to *show* others that
linux is better not just say why it is all the time.

I use linux at work and at home.

At work coworkers walk by my desk and say,

Them: wow you only use linux, how do you do this or that without
windows, I though you needed windows for that.

Me: Well, heres how... blah blah blah... and did you know its free, I
didn't have to pay for it :) Everybody likes free stuff :) I also
automate this, this, and that task with a small script to make my
daily tasks a little easier. Wouldn't you like to work smarter not
harder. Stop fighting windows and having to beat it into submission to
do something, linux works GREAT for me, you should give it a try
sometime. Hey, you know what, heres an Ubutu CD, let me know if I can
help you out when you get time to start using it :)

At home, relatives come over and say hey,

Them: thats an awesome screen saver, where did you get that.

Me: Oh, it comes with linux by default for free. The whole system is free.

Them: That's cool.

Me: Yea, it nice to have some sweet screen savers that aren't spyware
or virus or something else bad. Linux comes with all kinds of really
neat stuff and its all free. It even comes with an office suite, you
don't have to go by MS Office for $300 beans, spend that money on my
x-mass present ;).

Me: blah, blah, blah... I use it at work to b/c... blah blah blah...

Me: Hey next time I am at your house for x-mass or something I can set
it up on your home computer so you can have cool free stuff to. I'll
even set it up so that you can run windows and linux at the same time
to help ease you into it.

Analysts flap all the time about this and that, quoting this person
and that person but a big part of getting others to use something,
anything, is *showing them first hand* how great it is and how much
fun it can be to be involved with it and proving to them there is a
world outside of microsoft and dell(er, i build my machines but i know
most people don't do that). We should help them see the light :)

Aside from that, things like sound for enterprise desktops doesn't
matter so much, i think, how many companies buy you speakers with you
workstation. How many companies let you keep you speakers on if you
have em', it can be distracting to others.

Although sound and other multmedia stuff means a LOT at home. They do for me.

My 2 cents

Matt
