[Hoary] ADSL connection stops working after 2.5 hours of uptime

I have had similar problems in the past but it turned out to be totally unrelated to the OS. It turned out that the local exchange had made some changes that basically had screwed up my connection quality. My ADSL modem itself kept having to be reset so I gave them a call and an engineer came out, did some fiddling and my connection was back to normal. Has your brother tried the XP machine more than once for extended periods of time? If not then it may be worth trying, if only to rule out a faulty line.

My brother just mailed me about the problem he has had since I upgraded
his system to Hoary. His Internet connection always goes down after
about 2.5 hours (this varies a bit) and to get back online my brother
has to reboot he's PC. He is connected to Internet through an ethernet
card and an external ADSL device. He just tested the connection with
Windows XP and it stayed on for 22 hours until he shut down the machine.
A week ago the problem disappeared for a couple of days seemingly
without a reason.

It would be great to get some advice on how to track down the problem
behind this behaviour. I'm not sitting at my brothers machine now, so I
may have to give him instructions over the phone. Because of this I may
not be able to answer back here immediately. If the possible solution
includes using the command line, I will have the unpleasant task to talk
my brother over to use the terminal for the first time in his life (and
I know he is not going to like it :)
