laptop + external monitor

Hello

I'm setting up hoary on a dell latitute D505 with a i810 graphic chip.

While I can use the external display adaptor for a beamer using i855crt
I cannot use it as main screen.

When I start ubuntu with the laptop screen closed, the external
LCD-screen is active, but I never get a resolution higher that 640x480. 

I've tried several x-configuration I found searching but had no luck. My
latest experiment is attached.

While using both screens would be nice to have, I would be very happy
just being able to use either the external or the internal screen with a
decent resolution.
