Could you elaborate a bit ? What happens exactly ?
When you insert the DVD, doens't Totem start automaticaly ?
If you start Totem manually, then direct it to the DVD, what happens ?
Is the DVD drive properly working, that is... can you read data CD's ?
If you insert one, does Nautilus mount it automatically and put an icon
on the desktop ?

Hi Vince

Music Cd starts automatically & plays ( no probs )
Can read CD's from "APC Magazine".
DVD ROM worked OK under Win2000,
When attempting to "play" DVD it says it says ther's an error & wont
even start manually.

UNFORTUNATELY I'm at work ( 1000km from home )at the moment & wont be
back for 9 days & the laptop is at home.

Hi!
What did you do to get the X700 working -- was that just a new kernel?

Did you read the wiki about playinf DVDs? There's some packages you
need to install and some script to run... Also, I dont know how well
wine is going to run with 128 megs of ram...

I went to file a bug for the "file-roller" in Hoary, but I found a bug
report already about it. Nice thing is that someone there offered a
"patch" to cure the problem :

https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7216

Newb question, of course... how the hell does one apply "patches".

I understand I need to download the source files of the file -roller,
probably from Synpatic, then what ? The code of the patch doesn't look
like pure C code to me, is it ? What are these "@" symbols ? Are they
meant for some third-party program to know how to modify the source file
of interest ? Or should I just do it manually, open the source file with
Gedit and add the patch at the start of the file and the compiler will
suss it out ?

Hello, i am using an old knoppix distribtion, its kernel is 2.4.26.
Because i have to make this distribtion support for more hareware such
as kinds of sound, video card. On the other hand, one of my friend had
did a lot remaster work on this distribiton. It seems difficult for
updating kernel 2.4.** to 2.4.6 in old knoppix distribtion. So, anyone
can give me some advice? Is it easy for
Ubuntu(Kbuntu) to update its kernel and how well hardware support for
Ubuntu(Kbuntu)? thx very much!!

Ugh. It seems that dvdauthor is quite picky about mpeg files. From the
dvdauthor home page (http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/):

"Mjpeg Tools has the best multiplexer around. Others will often throw
warnings with dvdauthor."

> mplex wont take the file as input and I am unsure of how else to

Yes, see below. I've tried this with several different videos, and it
seems to work.

You'll need the following packages: mplayer, mjpegtools, ffmpeg.

(1) Convert your file to mpeg2 video in DVD format:

mplayer -ao null -noframedrop -vo yuv4mpeg AVI.avi

(2) Step one will create a file called "stream.yuv" in the current
directory, the next command will convert it to an mpeg2 video (all one
command, watch out for line wrapping):

cat stream.yuv | yuvfps -r 30000:1001 | yuvscaler -n n -O DVD | mpeg2enc
-n n -f 8 -F 4 -o out.m2v

Alternatively, if your original file has correct fps (29.970 for NTSC)
and the scaling is OK (720x480 for NTSC), you can simplify this to:

cat stream.yuv | mpeg2enc -n n -f 8 -F 4 -o out.m2v

(3) Next you need to get the audio from your original video file:

mplayer -ao pcm -vo null -vc dummy AVI.avi

(4) The result will be a new file called "audiodump.wav", the next
command will convert it to MP2 format:

ffmpeg -ab 224 -ac 2 -ar 48000 -i audiodump.wav audiodump.mp2

NOTE: you should be able to substitute "mp3enc" for "ffmpeg", but I
haven't tested it, so I can't verify that it works; mp3enc is part of
the mjpegtools package, and would allow you to avoid installing an extra
package (the ffmpeg package).

(5) Finally, multiplex the new video and audio files:

mplex -f 8 -o ready-to-master.mpg out.m2v audiodump.mp2

(6) I don't know the dvdauthor program very well at all, but the
following should allow you to make a dvd which will start up
automatically and play the mpeg2 video you just made, with no menus or
other fancy stuff.

Create a file called "dvdauthor.xml", containing:

<dvdauthor>
     <vmgm />
     <titleset>
         <titles>
             <pgc>
                 <vob file="ready-to-master.mpg"/>
             </pgc>
         </titles>
     </titleset>
</dvdauthor>

(7) Use dvdauthor to create the DVD filesystem:

dvdauthor -o output_dir/ -x dvdauthor.xml

(8) Use mkisofs to make an image, then burn with growisofs (useful for
checking that the image is correct, and finding any errors before you
burn a coaster):

mkisofs -dvd-video -o image.iso output_dir growisofs -dvd-compat -Z
/dev/dvd=image.iso

...or else use growisofs to master and burn in one step:

growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video /target-dir-for-dvd-filesystem-image

That's a lot of work, but should be more reliable that just using
mencoder, as I originally suggested (apologies in advance for any
typos/errors above).

You should be able to do basically the same thing with transcode (and
probably other tools as well).

Regards,
Larry

Do you boot Knoppix from CD or do you use a hard disk installation? If
your Linux is installed on a hard disk it's no problem at all to
exchange the kernel. You can either download a new kernel from the
Debian repositories by using apt-get or you can build a custom kernel
from the vanilla sources.

If you don't have a hard disk installation it's always very difficult to
change the kernel on a Live CD. In fact, that would require remastering
the CD and building your own CD. But if the kernel version is the only
problem you should just consider using a newer version of Knoppix.

In general the hardware support of Ubuntu/Kubuntu is very good but, of
course, the question if Ubuntu fits your requirements depends on the
hardware you use. If installed on a hard disk it's no problem to use
another kernel, but I wouldn't recommend this. One advantage of Ubuntu
is the security support and therefore it's always better to use the
default packages - in this case the default kernel - to make sure that
it will replaced by a fixed version if needed.

Okay, I made some progress. Seems that the "patch" is intended to be
used by the "patch" command, which will be in charge of updating the C
source file. Problem... I searched Synaptic for "roller". I found the
file-roller program, but not the the source code ! :o( I do have the
"source" repositories enabled, but still can't find it.
I thought I could maybe just get some source from the programs website,
but shocking, can't find it anywhere at www.gnome.org/projects nor
gnomefiles.org , can't believe it :-/

an imap e-mail account should allow you to do that. And most MUA
supports imap nowadays.

Do you mean it is difficult for changing any liveCD's kernel or just
Knoppix?
Actually, because one of my friend had done a lot work on an old
distribtion of knoppix, but that knoppix couldn't support much
hardware(Linux 2.4.26), so i want to change a new kernel and have a try.

The best way for me is using the same distribtion of Knoppix my friend
had remastered. But on the other hand, it can not support much hardware,
and now, i check the new version of knoppix, It seems knoppix had
changed a lot from kernel 2.4 to 2.6 I don't know how to do now :-( I am
really doublt when kernel changed, i should do all the work again.
