Realplayer 10 Gold sound quality

It is part of the configuration of alsa.  It can be at
/etc/asound.conf or /home/youruser/.asoundrc

By default Ubuntu doesn't configure software mixing.  I read that it
is a goal for the next version.  I did it by myself because I had many
programs that couldn't work together.
