Ubuntu install disk install a mostly debian system?

This is incorrect, when you install an ubuntu system, you have an UBUNTU system.
It can be VERY different then the current sid, it is stable for one
thing, and the packages arent changing like mad.
They also use things that are in debian experimental like Xorg, and
the latest Gnome.
Ubuntu takes a snapshot of sid then stablizes it and makes their own
repo. Distros like Mepis accually syncs with sid, and use the same
repos.
The core of Ubuntu is Debian, but the final product is FAR ahead of
debian in many ways.
