AMD64 Nvidia Ubuntu

I just installed Ubuntu AMD64 edition (Hoary). I am using a Nvidia
6800GT card and would like to know, in detail, how I would go about
installing 64-bit drivers. From my research I found that apt-get
nvidia-glx is some sort of driver for xwindows, for gnome; if I
understand properly. Is that the 'driver' and, if it is, would that be
the 64-bit version.

What components are needed to install a linux driver?
How can you tell what a driver is, by how it is labeled?

Thank you.
Brad
