[Hoary] Mplayer Installs But does not play !!

This is proving very frustrating but I am determined not to have to
install mplayer and mencoder from source.

I am installing mplayer-586 and mplayer-fonts with the source.list file
shown later in this email. Everything installs fine (apparently). I then
add the following Marriat repository to my sources.list file so that I
can install the w32codecs. This also appears to work fine.

When I start up mplayer from the Application drop down menu, it starts
up with what I assume is the blue theme and everything looks great.
However, if I try to play a *.mov or a *.avi file (they are the only two
I have tried so far) it just locks up. To close it down I have to issue
the Kill command.

I have tried running mplayer from the command line, and this is what I see:
