Advice needed on boot problem

Each time I boot up, I get an error when it checks the file system
For example, I might get:-
/dev/hdc7 clean ....etc
... fail
followed by an invitation to type the root password and correct the
problem manually.
Doing e2fsck on all partitions always returns clean and Ctrl-D
continues the boot normally, and the machine seems to be OK
I can't see anything obvious in the logs that explains it.
So why do I get these errors, and how may I stop them?
