I had a very similar problem a few months ago that turned out to be a
IDE cable not properly attached to a hard drive. And depending if the
HD was already "active" or not (i.e a fresh boot versus a reboot from
the other OS in my dual boot system), sometimes it worked, and sometimes
it didn't.
