Very strange. I just deleted /etc/fonts/local.conf completely and put the settings under dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig back to their defaults. I now get decent looking Japanese text and decent looking sans text in Thunderbird's folder and message lists. I think there's a back-up file somewhere if I discover my meddling has some horrific side effect. Nick
