Hi Robbo,
had done that , still no joy.
Did a re-boot, and problem solved. Had been doing  mount -a as root.
Was a bit reluctant to reboot, something wrong with my
machine, has been running continuously for 15 days only turning the 
monitor off, but
have problems getting it restarted, doesn't want to go beyond bios. 5/6 
restarts and it boots
(sometimes), so have been leaving it on with no problems.
Can now  mount /media/floppy as user and have floppy mounted with full 
access to contents.
