Nautilus and Places menu

What you're seeing is Nautilus in spatial mode, whereas you appear to be
using Nautilus in browser mode. If you want the bookmarks in the Places
menu to always open up in a browser window, then select System >
Preferences > File Management to view the File Management Preferences
window. Then on the Behaviour Tab check the item "Always open in
browser windows" option. From then on, every time you'll see the
browser window rather than the spatial one.
