Memory card reader (USB port) : ins and outs ?

I have a similar device: 7 in 1 (4 slots), a USB port and a firewire
port with audio out and mic, the one difference is its internal. I
plugged it into the onboard usb extension and works fine with compact
flash, USB devices and audio in Hoary. Acts just like usb storage. It
shows up in HAL device manager as a USB 2.0 device with 4 SCSI
devices. Think its made by In-Win (or at least branded that).

I can't imagine external/internal would make a difference...?

Have you tried a dedicated SD -> USB adaptor? I've used one in the
past; no problems on Hoary.
