The ZODB maintains a small persistent stub recording data (the help
system registration, mostly) for any project registered in the past
("persistence means always having to say you're sorry"). You can safely
delete all the product entries in the Control Panel and restart Zope --
the currently-installed products will re-register themselves.

I don't know anything about how Debian / Ubuntu packaged Zope 2.6, but
there are a number of critical fixes in the 2.7 line which were never
backported in the upstream to the 2.6 line: the last release on that
line was more than a year ago.
Given the choice, I would figure out how to make 2.7 work. THe 2.7 line
is likely to be the "old stable" version in the near future (I expect to
see a 2.8 beta release some time in April, with a final sometime in May).
