Also shawn, when you telnet to 127.0.0.1 make sure that you do 127.0.0.1 
110 :)

Are you running an amd64 per chance? If so make sure that you're using 0.8.2

Also in regards to the install guides, I suggest that you follow the 
inetd install instructions:
