Evince won't install using apt/synaptic if you have upgraded your libraries.

PDF is a compressed version of PostScript (text, graphics and layout). 
It stands for Portable Document Format.  The Portable was intended that
PDF documents appear exactly the same regardless of the OS.  This is
only guaranteed, though, if either the fonts used exist on the system,
or they are embedded.
