kubuntu external usb hard-drive install

trying to do the same thing as well.  from what i understand from
http://www.simonf.com/usb/ and http://tinyurl.com/4t86o is that we need
to build a new initrd image that loads the usb modules, waits for it to
detect the drive and creates the root device using the usb drive.  I am
also trying to figure out how to edit the initrd image.  If i can get it
to work ill post the image somewhere.  Let me know if you had any luck
with this yet.
