I didn't get quite the same message, but almost... with the Ubuntu  
2.6.10 kernel:

However, with my 2.6.12-rc1 kernel (custom build, ACPI enabled,  
repaired DSDT loaded at boot time), my usb-storage device IS detected.  
The messages are quite different. Of course, I can't be sure whether  
it's because it's 2.6.12-rc1 (and this was fixed in one of the  
intermediate kernels) or if it's because it only works properly with  
working ACPI, or if it's due to some little idiosynchracy in my kernel  
.config. If you can rule out the first two, I could mail you my config.
