Hopefully you'll find that if you hit cancel (or whatever the button is
called) on the "gnome-panel has quit unexpectedly" dialog about ten
times it'll go away.  You won't have any menu or anything but you'll be
able to right click on the desktop to open a terminal window.  If that
doesn't work maybe you can log in using 'safe mode' or whatever it's
called.

I think just deleting the .metacity folder in your home directory will
fix the problem when you log in again or restart.  Probably best to back
it up first.

I'm not sure if this next step is necessary, but I used 'gksudo
users-admin' and created a new user and copied the virgin config files
over the 'more experienced' config files in my home directory.  I then
changed the file ownership to my normal username and restarted.
