Soundcard problems

Hi I have a SiS SI7012 (Chip: C-Media Electronics CMI9761) soundcard
built into into my motherboard.

I am running Ubuntu Hoary.
All the necessary alsa modules load correctly. However, I can hear no
sound from any player that I use.

I have tested with the oss driver i810_audio and the sound works
correctly.

Does anyone have experience with the snd_intel8x0 alsa driver ?

I would rather use the alsa drivers if possible, as the gnome volume
control doesn't seem to work with the oss driver.

lsmod produces

snd_intel8x0 29984 2
snd_ac97_codec 64608 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm_oss 47652 1
snd_mixer_oss 16768 2 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 84744 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 23300 1 snd_pcm
snd 50276 6
snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixe r_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 9824 3 snd
snd_page_alloc 9604 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

I get no errors from alsactl or alsamixer or anything for that matter so
it is hard to find out what could be wrong. Players act as if everything
is fine.

Only lines in dmesg output are

intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 49017 usecs
intel8x0: clocking to 48000

If I must use the oss drivers how do I disable /etc/init.d/alsa from
complaining about no sound card ? I cant remove alsa-base as it depends
upon ubuntu-base, and if I just remove /etc/init.d/alsa upgrades of
alsa-base will overwrite that I think.

Thanks for any help.

Glenn
