Ubuntu and laptops

I've been down these roads before, but to little or no avail.

The fact that it works in SuSE (and Slack, etc) for that matter
implies to me that it should work. The problem I think lies with
something else interfering - it's just a matter of what :)

I do tend to use it plugged in mostly - this is more of an annoyance -
I suppose I could just remove the applet from the panel, but I'd
rather see a fix.

It even worked properly in XFCE on ubuntu with the applet for that.
AFAIK, this uses the same underlying components.
