no sound device /dev/dsp

Hi,

a couple of days ago I wrote an email to this list because suddenly I
hadn't had the sound device /dev/dsp anymore under Warty. The same thing
happend now to me unter Hoary.. During boot ALSA is set up without any
errors and the /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg don't give any hint
on a fault.

XMMS shows the following error when trying to play any audio file:

Please check that: Your soundcard is configured properly, you have the
correct output plugin selected, no other program is blocking the soundcard

After changing the audio output plugin to ALSA 1.2.10 (libALSA.so) XMMS
plays everything fine. Changing back to the OSS Driver 1.2.10
(libOSS.so) nothing works.

Thanks for any pointers.
