 Try something like this:

  - Go to console
  - Type: telnet your.host.with.smtp 25
  - You should see something like this:

  emil at rude:~ $ telnet localhost 25
  Trying 127.0.0.1...
  Connected to localhost.localdomain.
  Escape character is '^]'.
  220 localhost.localdomain ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)

 If you see something similar, your SMTP server is up.
