To wrap this thread up, the issue ( see https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7097 ) seems to have been resolved in a recentish update. No more disk-activity blinking, the bug is marked FIXED, and the world is at peace. hooray! -Mad Dr. Hrothgar. -- MadDrHrothgar
